Where are They Now – the Lives of Post Gold Awardees
Meet Emily Nys: Gold Award Class, 2009 – Now attending Rollins College on a Full Scholarship
I stayed in Girl Scouting through the 12th grade because it was so much fun; we always had such a great time together and had so many opportunities to grow and learn. I earned my Gold Award in 2009 as I graduated the 12th grade. Completing my Gold Award Project taught me how to really work as a team – not just as the member of a troop. I found out how to work with a large group of people, and fine tune my own early business skills, both skills which have carried on with me to college.
Today I go to school at Rollins College in Winter Park, FL, and study Marine Biology. My future plans are to conduct research on coral reef biology and coral reef diseases. My Gold Award was a significant element for me to earn a full scholarship to a private liberal arts college, Rollins College (valued at over $200,000). And yes, my Gold Award project was one of my talking points for all of my college interviews! To Read More: 2009 Gold Awardee – Emily
Meet Erica: Gold Award Class, 2008 – Now a Yale University Student
My name is Erica Blonde and I earned my Girl Scouts Gold Award in 2008. I stayed in Girl Scouting through the 12th grade because of the new world of opportunities that Girl Scouting opened up for me year after year. I also had an amazing troop leader who kept us all together and engaged throughout middle and high school.
By completing my Gold Award Project I learned how to work independently and with others. In contrast with community service projects I’d done before, for my Gold Award project, I was the person in charge. To Read More: 2008 Gold Awardee – Erica
Meet Alex: Gold Award Class, 2009 – Future Army Medical Corps Member
My name is Alex Lau and I earned my Gold Award in 2009. I stayed in Girl Scouting through the 12th grade because my troop became my family. While working on my Gold Award Project I learned that success is a journey, not a destination. The best thing about perusing my Gold Award is all the open doors and opportunities it still affords me.
Because I chose to earn my Gold Award I was able to put it on my resume for college and job applications too – it’s a big deal. Today I attend the Broward College Honors Institute and I am receiving a two year softball scholarship and academic scholarship towards my studies in physical and massage therapy.
